Body Contouring Facts

Most people have heard about the popular cosmetic surgical procedures that target the facial features.  However, in addition to breast augmentation, there are numerous common kinds of cosmetic surgery for the rest of the body as well.  It’s obvious that people have a lot of worries about their overall appearance, and this means that any ugly or unusual aesthetic feature, whether it’s on the face or anywhere else visible, can have negative consequences.  If people lack confidence in some aspect of their appearance, it can make it nearly impossible for them to live their lives to the fullest, and sometimes, even regarding the body as opposed to the face, the issue cannot be corrected effectively through any means but cosmetic surgery.  Body contouring encompasses most kinds of cosmetic surgery that deal with the body.  These operations intend to alter the shape of the body, usually by removing excess fat or other tissues and by lifting the remaining tissues.

Liposculpture is the most popular of these procedures.  Liposuction involves the use of a surgical tube device called a cannula and a suction device called an aspirator to extract fat.  The surgeon makes a small incision in the area in question, and a certain quantity of liquid – depending on several factors – is introduced so that the fat can be removed without problems.  Liposuction is so popular because it is a reliable way of addressing a problem that many people experience.  Liposuction does not function as a weight-loss tactic, as the actual amount of fat extracted is quite small; rather, liposuction is only really appropriate for healthy individuals who, even with sufficient exercise, are unable to get eliminate fat from specific problem areas.  Common problem areas include the neck, the abdomen, the thighs, and, for men, the “love handles.”  Recently, more refined liposuction procedures such as Liposculpture and SmartLipo have been developed, which target more specific areas and come with even less scarring and risk of other complications.

The abdominoplasty, also known as the “tummy tuck,” is another common body contouring operation.  This procedure works to tighten loose skin and excise tissues causing the appearance of looseness from the the belly area, an issue which is particularly prevalent with individuals who have undergone significant weight loss, as well as women who have experienced pregnancy.  Incisions may be made in different areas with consideration to the extensiveness of the operation.  In some cases, even just one incision may be sufficient in order to carry out the operation.  The belly button can be raised as part of the tummy tuck operation if necessary.

Body lifts are also considered body contouring operations.  These include thigh lifts and buttock lifts.  Buttock lifts and thigh lifts are closely related in that, in both cases, excess tissues are removed and the remaining tissues are tightened in the affected areas.  They aim at a more youthful, tighter look to the area.  A thigh lift and buttock lift can be combined with an abdominoplasty, resulting in what is known as the lower body lift.  Conversely, the upper body lift combines the upper arm lift, a procedure involving the removal of excess tissue from behind the upper arm, and the breast lift, which addresses sagging breasts and can also be performed in combination with breast augmentation surgery in some cases.  The upper and lower body lift can be performed together, resulting in a “full body lift,” which is one of the most extensive cosmetic operations currently being performed.

The category of body contouring also includes certain types of implants, like buttock implants and calf implants.  Buttock implants aim to increase the volume of the buttock area, and also result in a fitter feel and appearance.  Calf implants may also be used to deal with genetic issues which affect the muscle tone of the legs, or may simply be added for cosmetic reasons.  Calf implantation is a procedure very common for bodybuilders, because the calves can be hard to develop fully even when the “correct” training regimen is adhered to.

All surgical procedures certain risks, as well as a period of recovery time.  Please consult with a surgeon to find out if any of these procedures is a good choice for you.
